Make Your Own Ornaments With the DIY Advent Calendar

As a lover of crafts and holidays, Kid Made Modern’s DIY Advent Calendar is, really, a very cool product! My favorite thing about it is that it comes with all craft supplies already included to do the suggested crafts in their advent calendar. So no need to go sourcing around, tracking art supplies, especially these days with COVID-19 lockdowns. Kid Made Modern has done all the work for you!

The concept of Kid Made Modern’s DIY advent calendar is for kids to make handmade presents for all the people that they love and then gift them on Christmas.

I love the aspect of giving built into the design of this calendar.

But today I wanted to share another way to use this calendar as well.

Children’s handmade crafts and ornaments can be precious memories for years to come. And some kids are also sentimental about the things that they make and like to hang onto them.

So instead of gifting all of the crafts away, I thought it would be fun if kids worked through the calendar each day to make decorations to hang on their very own kiddy Christmas tree.

By Christmas, their tree will be completely decorated, ready to celebrate the holiday!

For this, I’ve shown here a 4ft tall artificial Christmas tree. It’s a great size for kids to decorate by themselves. You can use similar kid-sized Christmas trees.

Then, just work your way through the calendar each day following the craft prompts. It’s open-ended play and the possibilities are endless of how to carry out the craft.

Once the craft is completed, use a hot glue gun to adhere an ornament clip to the back of the craft. This makes it easy for hanging.

Kids will love hanging their own handmade ornaments on their very own bite-sized tree!

For the days, when the calendar suggests making a drawing, you can hang up the completed drawing on the tree too as décor! It’s easy to clip onto the tree with a clothespin. (An ornament clip might not be strong enough here.)

I’ve even hung up a letter to Santa on their tree. Maybe instead of a wishlist to mail Santa ahead of time, the letter to Santa is a more personal one, for Santa to receive from the tree himself on Christmas Eve when he pays a visit ;)

And for the days, when the calendar suggests making a card or a gift for a loved one, have the kiddos do that too. On Christmas Eve, the calendar will prompt the kids to wrap the presents they made. They’re perfect for tucking under their self-decorated tree!

As a bonus, the calendar itself is also a coloring page. Countdown the days to Christmas by coloring each day’s box as you go.

I think it’s nice to have the calendar hung right by the tree to see daily progress. Here I’ve taped the calendar to a window and placed the tree next to it. An electrical outlet nearby makes it easy to light up the tree as well.
