Have you ever wanted to go behind-the-scenes at Kid Made Modern? Today, we're giving you the inside scoop on one of our amazing employees Michelle Romo
Meet Michelle
Michelle is a Senior Product Designer here at Kid Made Modern, as well as an amazing artist. Read below to discover what a typical day at Kid Made Modern looks like, what her favorite Kid Made products are, as well as where she finds inspiration!
What does a typical day working at Kid Made Modern look like for you?
A typical day at Kid Made Modern is pretty fun for me.
I spend my time creating new craft kits, illustrating artwork, and choosing fun components to make the kits as interesting as possible!
Let's use the Shrink Art Jewelry Kit as an example. I started working on that by drawing fun graphics of unicorns, sparkles, and ice cream cones for the shrink art. Then I chose the beads, and the color palette for the cords, and colored pencils!
I'll also brainstorm new concepts, review samples of new kits, and sometimes I even get to craft the kits to test them out.
Where do you draw inspiration from when creating products for Kid Made Modern?
I like kids' designs in general so I am always looking at toys and watching cartoons! I also try to think about what I wanted to make when I was a kid - or even what I think would be fun for me to craft now!
One of my biggest inspirations is my boyfriend's daughter. She is a very crafty lady! She'll bring me ideas of what she wants to make and we'll make it together. Most recently she made a magical secret lock box out of an old tea box that I had covered with iridescent paper. One time I brought over a bunch of foam pieces and we spent the afternoon cutting it into shapes, hole punching the edges and sewing them into stuffed buddies.
What is your favorite part of designing products for kids?
My fave part of designing products for kids is that it's never boring! I like bright colors and silly graphics so I feel pretty lucky that I can spend my time drawing purple unicorns and yellow dinosaurs as part of my work day.
Fave Kid Made Modern product and why?
My favorite Kid Made Modern product is the Fuzzy Stick Sculpture set. It's really easy for anyone to use, it can be set up aa million different ways and I think the finished craft looks great as an art piece!
