THE APPETIZER CRAFT: FALL LEAF PAINTING PRINTS

A leaf scavenger hunt is a great way to get kids outdoors while the weather is still mild, and encourages young minds to learn from nature while finding leaves with interesting shapes for their Fall Leaf Painting Prints!

Materials: 

• Lots of unique shaped leaves
• Construction Paper
• Paint brush or brush

Steps:

1. Paint your leaves

Using a brush of any kind, pick your favorite colors and paint one side of each leaf with your color choice using the Kid Made Modern Washable Paint Set. Feel free to get creative by painting two or more colors on one leaf!

2. Make your mark

Flip the painted side of each leaf down onto the construction paper and press down for several seconds. Slowly lift the leaf up to reveal a colorful painted print of your leaf! Repeat the process until your paper is filled with fabulous foliage.

3. Mix up your method

Experiment with using negative space, and try a different kind of leaf print! Press down un-painted leaves onto the construction paper and paint over the leaves with the Kid Made Modern Washable Paint Set. Use different colors, and make sure you paint over the whole piece of paper! When you lift up the leaves, you’ll have a lovely colorful backdrop that showcases beautifully shaped leaf silhouettes.

Materials include:

• Pom poms
• Fuzzy Sticks
• Glass eyes
• Fuzzy beads
• Animal print fabric sheets

For this craft, you may also need scissors and a hot glue gun (though regular glue works too!) Adult supervision is recommended. 

Steps:

1. Build the body

Using glue or hot glue, attach two orange or brown pom poms together. The pom pom that rests on top will become the turkey’s head!

2. Shake your tail feathers!

Take several earth-toned fuzzy sticks and wrap them around the top of the lower pom pom. Bend the fuzzy sticks so that they fan out and up behind the pom poms. These will serve as your turkey’s magnificent fanned feather display!

3. Beautify your bird

Using the glass eyes or two white fuzzy beads, glue or hot glue your turkey’s “eyes” on to the top of the first pom-pom. Cut one small triangle and one small, long oval shape out of the animal print fabric sheets, and glue them just below the eyes. This will serve as the beak and wattle (Yes, that’s what the red dangly thing is called!)

4. Time for turkey legs

Wrap a fuzzy stick around the base of the lower pom pom and bend so that both sides of the stick just out below the turkey. Now your bird has legs, and is ready for the party!

“DESSERT” CRAFT: THANKFUL PIE

It’s so important for kids to reflect on what they are thankful for, and this craft creates a fun, tactile, and tangible way for the whole family to express their gratitude. Using a few simple materials and supplies from the Kid Made Modern Crayon Library, this craft is as easy as…. well, you know.

Materials:

• Paper Plates
• Construction papers
• Scissors
• Paper fastener

Steps:

1. Make the pie filling

Take a piece of orange construction paper and place a paper plate on top of it. Trace the outline of the paper plate, and then cut out the circle. Then, cut a small triangle out of the orange circle (this will serve as the “slice” of pie).

2. Bake the pie

Place the paper circle on top of the paper place and poke the paper fastener through both the paper and the plate and fasten. The orange filling should now easily rotate around the circle.

3. Give thanks!

Using a rainbow of colors from the Kid Made Modern Crayon Library, fill in your pie with gratitude. First, write “I am thankful for…” on the orange circle. Then, pass the pie and a crayon around to each kid. Have them write in the white triangle slice what they are thankful for, and then rotate the paper to create a new “slice” space for the next kid. You’ll have a delicious craft made with gratitude and teamwork!
