Upcycled Cardboard Rainbow

Nothing says spring quite like a big, beautiful rainbow! The Kid Made Modern Over The Rainbow Craft Kit has EVERYTHING you need to make the most amazing rainbow crafts. Read on to see how we made this beautiful cardboard rainbow with our kit!

Materials Needed:

-Cardboard

-Pencil

-Over the Rainbow Craft Kit

-Divided tray (like a chip and dip tray!)

-Scissors

-Glue (liquid glue or hot glue)

How To:

Step 1: Cut a large rainbow shape from cardboard. Use a pencil to separate the cardboard into 6 sections, one for each rainbow color!

Step 2: Open your Over the Rainbow Craft Kit! There are so many amazing and brightly colored supplies inside. Use your divided tray to sort the craft supplies by color. We used some of everything inside: sparkly paper, beads, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, pom-poms and sequins.

Step 3: Use your scissors to cut some of the larger items, like pipe cleaners and sparkly paper into smaller pieces.

Step 4: Fill the first section of your rainbow with a heavy layer of glue. Stick red (and pink!) items from your tray to fill this section. You may need to add a little extra glue for heavier items likes beads and large pom poms.

Step 5: Repeat step 4 with the remaining rainbow colors: orange, yellow, green, blue and then purple.

Step 6: Allow your rainbow to dry completely! Find a spot in your house where you can hang your rainbow and enjoy it!

Add a Little STEAM!

Looking for even more activities you can do with rainbow colors? Try these two STEAM ideas:

1. Fizzy Color Mixing! Fill a shallow pan with a layer of baking soda. Pour a little vinegar into three small cups. Add a few drops of food coloring to the vinegar: one red, one blue and one yellow. Use an eyedropper to squirt different colors of vinegar into the tray.

First, you’ll notice the fizzing! Baking soda and vinegar react with one another to create carbon dioxide gas (that’s what’s filling up the bubbles). Next, try mixing two different colors of vinegar together in the baking soda. What color do red and blue make when mixed? Blue and yellow? Yellow and red? What if you mix all three?

2. Magic Milk! Magic milk is a classic rainbow color experiment with really exciting results. First, fill a shallow pan with a layer of whole milk. Next, add a few drops of different colors of food coloring to the milk (but don’t mix it!). Dip the end of a q-tip into some dish soap, then stick the q-tip into the food coloring and milk. What happened?! The colors look like they explode into fireworks!

Why does this happen? The dish soap is attracted to the fat in the milk! When the soap touches the milk, soap molecules rush off to try and attach to fat molecules! They move the food coloring in the process so that we can see what is happening!
