Hearts are iconic for Valentine’s Day, which is exactly why this series of heart-themed crafts is perfect to celebrate love this February! Each heart-filled piece of artwork is similar in technique, filling a heart template with one type of material per piece of art, from tissue paper to fuzzy sticks. Using the majority of our materials from the Kid Made Modern Valentine Craft Bundle, every heart is unique and bursting with color and sparkle!
In this small craft series, we will go through the steps to create six different styles of hearts, as well as learn to make cardboard frames and picture hangers to display your entire gallery of Valentine art. This collection of art will make adorable gifts for each of your friends this Valentine’s Day! Watch the video tutorial below:
Cardboard Frame + Picture Hanger
Supplies:
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- White Craft Glue
- Tape
- Embroidery Thread of Yarn
To create a custom picture frame and hanger:
- Using your ruler, measure ½” sections that are at least 11” long. You will need 2 – 11” strips and 2 – 8 ½” strips for each picture frame.
- Cut the cardboard strips out with scissors.
- Paint the cardboard strips a color of your choice, you’ll mostly like need at least two coats of paint for an opaque finish on your cardboard.
- When your cardboard strips are dry, overlap the short strips on top of the long strips, lining up each corner to create a rectangular shape.
- Lift up the short strips and add a drop of craft glue in each corner, place the short strips back on top and push down to add a small amount of pressure for the glue to adhere.
- When you’re ready to attach your frame to your finished artwork, add glue to the back of the frame on the long strips and place it on your piece of paper, lining up the corners and set aside to dry.
- Once your frame is attached, flip your artwork over to create the picture hanger.
- Cut a 6-7” piece of thread or yarn and lay it horizontally across the picture, approximately 2” down from the top.
- Using 2 pieces of tape, tape down the thread on either side and your picture hanger is complete and your artwork is ready to hang!

- Cut tissue paper into 2” squares – approximately 50 squares
- Take each square of tissue paper and gather in the middle by pinching the center underneath and twisting slightly so the tissue cluster holds its shape. Continue gathering and bunching your tissue paper until you’ve created approximately 50 tissue clusters.
- Fill your heart shape with white glue, either drizzle the glue from the tube or paint it on to create a thin layer of glue on the entire heart shape.
- Take each cluster of tissue paper and push the pointed/clustered side into the glue, use a pencil, eraser side down, adding pressure for the tissue to adhere to the glue. Follow the outline of your heart template to create a border of tissue clusters, then continue the same method to fill in the entire heart.
- Let your glue dry and attach your cardboard frame and hanger if you desire!

- To create a simple pattern of rhinestones, make a center row of rhinestones in the middle of the heart, then any rhinestone placed on one side of the center, place a rhinestone in the same position on the opposite side. Continue this method until the majority if the heart is filled with sparkle.

- Feel free to add additional sequins overlapping others to create more depth and be sure there are no empty spaces in the heart.
- Once your heart is covered with sequins, flip over your heart and cut all the sequins hanging off the edge by cutting along the border of the template.
- Flip your trimmed heart over and glue it down to the center of your 8 ½” x 11” white cardstock.
- Next, since we’re using hot glue for this craft, be sure to pull away any hot glue strings and clean up your artwork nicely.

Fuzzy Stick Heart
Supplies:
- 10-15 fuzzy sticks in varying colors (included in Valentine Craft Bundle)

- White Cardstock – 8 ½” x 11”
- Hot Glue

- Cardboard Frame optional
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- White Craft Glue
To make you fuzzy stick filled heart:
- Trace the heart template in the center of your 8 ½” x 11” cardstock using a pencil. You can also draw your own heart or different shape if you want to use this technique for different holidays as well!
- Using 3 – 12” fuzzy sticks, we will glue them to the outline of the heart using hot glue. Using a small bit of glue at a time to be sure the glue doesn’t dry too quickly, overlap the hot glue with a fuzzy stick, bending it slightly at the curves of the outline.
- The third fuzzy stick will need to be cut down to fill in the remaining border, lay the fuzzy stick in the gap of the border and cut the stick to length, glue it in place with hot glue to finish the border.
- Cut the remaining fuzzy sticks into ½” to 1 ½” segments, varying sizes are ideal.
- Begin gluing the newly cut fuzzy stick segments into the center of the heart. Using no particular pattern, just laying a different color segment next to each other to create a random pattern. Continue gluing each segment into the heart until you’ve filled the entire heart.
- As you finish filling your heart, take any remaining tiny segments and glue them on top to cover any gaps, by gluing them slightly on top of the other fuzzy sticks you will get an additional layer to create more depth to your craft.
- Next, since we’re using hot glue for this craft, be sure to pull away any hot glue strings and clean up your artwork nicely.
- Lastly, glue your cardboard frame to your artwork if you chose to and your fuzzy stick art is complete!
Felt Filled Heart
Supplies:
- Felt Hearts in various colors and sizes (included in Valentine Craft Bundle)

- Scissors
- Ruler
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- White Craft Glue
To craft your felt filled heart:
- Using your heart template and hot glue, cover the template with the pre-cut felt hearts, hot gluing each one as you fill it. To create a layered look, overlap the felt hearts positioning them slightly different for not distinct pattern. If you are not using the pre-cut felt hearts, you can cut hearts or other shapes from standard pieces of felt for a similar look.
- Once your heart template is filled with felt, layer the additional small hearts on top for added color and depth.
- Turn your template over and cut the hearts away along the border that overlap the edge for a clean perimeter.
- Flip your trimmed heart back over so the felt is facing up and glue it in the center of your white cardstock.
- If you’re adding a cardboard frame, glue it on now and add your picture hanger, your felt valentine art is now complete!
Paper Circle Heart
Supplies:
- Construction Paper in varying colors (included in Valentine Craft Bundle)
- Metallic Cardstock (included in Valentine Craft Bundle)
- Heart Template (included in Valentine Craft Bundle)
- White Cardstock – 8 ½” x 11”
- Hot Glue or White Craft Glue
- Scissors
- Varying sizes of circular objects to trace – we used 2 different size decorative tape rolls from the Valentine Craft Bundle
To make your paper circle heart:
- Using our tape rolls (or any small circular object you can trace that have a 1” to 3” diameter), trace circles onto each of the different colors of construction paper. Using the interior and exterior of the tape roll to trace a total of four different size circles. Do the same on the metallic cardstock, tracing the circles on the reverse side so your pencil marks show up.
- Cut out each of the circles you traced, approximately 30-40 circles depending on their size.
- Using hot glue or craft glue, start gluing the circles onto the heart template, selecting different sizes and colors to overlap as you fill it in. Let the circles along the border overlap the edges as you go.
- Once your heart is filled with circles, flip it over and cut away any of the circles hanging off the edges by following the template border.
- Glue your trimmed heart in the middle of the white cardstock and attach your handmade frame and picture hanger to complete your artwork.
